Captain’s Log, Star Date 1.0

Well, surprise, surprise. I have a blog! I never thought I’d be a blogger, but there it is. I was going to post some notes about my latest hiking adventure on Facebook, but I had a lot to say about it. So, low-and-behold, I’m now a blogger.

Believe me, no one is more surprised than me.

I have no idea what I’ll write about, or how often. Could be just a one-off. Funny thing is, I find that as I get older, I have more to say. I spent the first 50 years of my life trying to NOT be noticed. I’ve always thought that Invisibility is clearly the best super power. But I turned 50 a few months ago, and it seems like all of a sudden I’ve found my voice.

It has a lot to do with the gun violence epidemic that’s going on in our country. These mass shootings keep happening, and things keep NOT CHANGING. I get distraught over this, and distracted from everything – my job, my family, everything. And so in order to try to be less consumed with all of the crap that’s going on in the world, I decided that I can’t be quiet any more. Whenever I see a Facebook post that I don’t agree with, I feel the need to say so.

Not on the little things – I don’t care if you think that the new Star Trek movies are better than the originals. You are totally and completely wrong if you do, but I’m not going to argue with you about that.

But if you’re one of these paranoid types who feel the need to own an arsenal of military-grade weapons in order to protect your family from an imminent invasion by the US Government, I’ve got something to say about that. I’m working hard on learning to say these things politely, but I’m also working on speaking up. Because I have decided that if I want things around me to change, I’ve got to be willing to say so.

So, there you have it. I’m now a blogger, at least for the moment. Knowing how short my attention span tends to be, it probably won’t last. But for now, this is where I am.
