Today's Sightings

Things I saw today:

  • Three tractor-trailers turned over on their sides within a mile of each other on a mountainous highway. There was a warning sign about high winds. They weren't kidding!

  • An open-bed tractor trailer with probably 100 crates on the back of it, each with 2 live chickens in it. It was 22 degrees at the time, the chickens had absolutely no cover, and the truck was barreling down the highway at about 60 miles an hour. Is that how we get frozen chicken??? Despicable.

  • Approximately 27 Fed Ex trucks and 4 UPS trucks. Had time to think about the fact FedEx is changing their color scheme from blue/red to blue/green. Did some of my best-ever marketing analysis, right then and there, on the highway. My market research (27 fedex trucks vs 4 ups) tells me that this is a winning marketing strategy.

  • Approximately 25 billboards talking about Jesus, hell or the bible. I am still in the south, after all.

  • Plenty of “Trump 2021” signs. I am still in the south, after all. They haven’t given up yet…

  • Snow. I thought I was still in the south??

  • A small dog happily rubbing her face all over the snowy ground. Cutest dog ever, btw.

And a few things that spawned ideas for future books that I’m going to write in my spare time. Stop laughing. I will have spare time some day!

  • A tiny church in an urban oasis, which, for some inexplicable reason, is painted a fire-engine red. There’s gotta be a story behind that choice. If not, I’ll make one up.

  • A mountain pass that survivors of the zombie apocalypse have to cross over on foot in order to escape the zombies. I haven’t yet worked out why they have to go on foot instead of driving in cars, or ATVs, or snowmobiles. But if you’ve watched any zombie apocalypse movies, you know that’s how it works.

  • Another apocalyptic scenario, but in this case, the culprit is wind. Could enormous, sustained wind storms wipe out humanity? Well, hey, if gusts of wind can knock tractor-trailers off the road, I think that’s plausible!

Spending a chilly night in Winchester, Virginia tonight. Don’t worry, I got my propane tank filled today, so the heat is blasting in here. Plus I have a snuggly bunk mate.

Tomorrow I’ll be in Pennsylvania getting my RV winterized. From there, I’ll have a tough decision to make. With a snowy forecast in PA, NY and parts of MA on Friday, that won’t be a good driving day. So my choices are: push through all the way from PA to home on Thursday, or hang out in frigid PA for another day. Did I mention that I’m dry camping? Yeah, it’s too cold to have water running through the RV’s pipes now. Since most of them run underneath the camper, they’d freeze in a heartbeat. So that means no water.

Having no means of washing dishes doesn’t bother me much (I’ll just save them up for when I get home), and I’ve got plenty of bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and other necessary personal hygiene tasks. I can use the bathroom here at the campground, as long as I’m willing to don my boots, hat, gloves and jacket, and schlep up to the bath house each time. Did you know that my son once claimed I have the bladder of a squirrel?? I’ve got a bucket, but that’s an unpleasant prospect.

So needless to say, I’d like to get home where my warm bathroom is only a few warm steps away from my warm bed. But I’d also like to arrive alive, so… We’ll see.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to do anything stupid. Remember, I’ve got a comfy bed and a working kitchen just a few steps behind my driver’s seat, which means I can set up shop just about anywhere. And I’ve got a whole list of campgrounds that’ll be happy to have me for a couple nights, if I need them. Either way, I’ll be home by Saturday.

Ahhh, I like the sound of that!

Stay warm, my friends.
